A Modern Spin on Classic Shortbread

You’ve never had shortbread like this! If your idea of shortbread comes from the cookie aisle at the supermarket, it’s time for a reality check. Shortbread Society, founded by Chef Scottish Francis (from Season 5 of "Masterchef") and his wife Christine, is a hidden gem with a cult following in the heart of Jersey City’s Powerhouse Arts District. Francis’ Scottish roots and Christine’s creative vision combine to dream up innovative and decadent flavor combinations that elevate classic shortbread into a dessert experience unlike any other.

Francis and Christine have crafted over 400 unique flavors, making Shortbread Society America’s premier luxury shortbread bakery, and they're best known for their Millionaire's Shortbread with buttery shortbread, thick Highland caramel, and a luxurious chocolate top. From holiday exclusives to imaginative new releases, every bite is a one-of-a-kind adventure. This is shortbread like you’ve never had before—decadent, crave-worthy, and unforgettable.

MEET THE FOUNDERS

Chef Scottish Francis

Co-Founder & Excecutive Chef

Born in Scotland and raised on a steady diet of shortbread, sarcasm, and second helpings, Chef Scottish Francis learned to cook the proper way: standing on a stool beside his grandparents, stirring pots and sneaking tastes before anyone was looking. From the windswept hills of the UK to the bustling kitchens of New York, his culinary journey has always been about more than food—it’s been about story, spectacle, and soul.

Francis burst onto American screens as a fan favorite on MasterChef (Season 5), held his own on Chopped, battled sugar and science on Netflix’s Snack vs. Chef, and even beat Bobby Flay with a plate of British fish and chips. Yes, beat him. The win still smells faintly of vinegar and glory.

After opening two donut shops and earning write-ups in Zagat, Time Out New York, The Wall Street Journal, and more, he launched his most beloved venture yet: Shortbread Society, which he co-founded with his wife and partner, Christine. Inspired by his Granny Pearl’s treasured Millionaire’s Shortbread recipe, the bakery quickly gained cult status for its decadent layers, bold flavors, and dramatic flair. Zagat called him “the Banksy of bakers,” and honestly, he’s still blushing.

When Francis isn’t baking, he’s directing bold music videos, experimenting with 3D photography, and creating desserts that blur the line between art and experience

Christine Von Becker-Legge

Co-Founder & Creative Director

Born and raised in Syracuse, New York Christine studied fine art and has always loved painting, murals, and illustration. She moved to NYC in 1995 and spent over 20 years working in laser eye surgery — all while staying deeply connected to the art and fashion world.

At Shortbread Society, Christine brings the creative spark. She develops many of the signature flavors, shapes the brand’s visual identity, runs social media, and makes sure every detail — from packaging to customer experience — feels just right. She also hand-packs every order, adding her signature touch of care and style.

The logo, which Christine designed, features their two Italian Greyhounds, Hamlet and Midnight. Hamlet is no longer with them, but Midnight is the real star of the show — and very much the heart of the home.
